(1) Concept
The VThK (Virtual Catalogue for Theology and Church) views itself as a point of
convergence in the internet where users can access electronic catalogues of collections
from scholarly religious and church libraries as well as
theological collections in libraries of state universities or
other state libraries, all in German-speaking countries.
Through the use of a catalogue search engine based on the technology developed by the Karlsruhe
Virtual Catalogue (Karlsruher Virtueller Katalog, KVK), you can simultaneously access the online
catalogues of the participating libraries as well as those collections integrated in the search engine,
all using one standard search form.
We are still planning to link the VThK with other catalogue search engines, for
example with the KVK, with central websites of religious institutions, and with local
online catalogues of participating libraries.
The VThK, as a catalogue for theology and church, offers a
subject-specialized access to the collections of all areas of Catholic and Protestant
theology, including related subjects and adjoining disciplines as well as the
collections in scholarly religious or church libraries in general.
In this way the VThK complements the local and regional access to
electronic catalogues of these sources, which already exists through the internet
catalogues of individual libraries and/or through the representation of individual
libraries in regional catalogue networks.
In this way VThK users have at their disposal a very comprehensive access
to literature in theological and church collections which exceeds the data
available in library catalogue networks, as many scholarly religious and church
libraries catalogue component parts of publications, and many such
libraries may not be members of regional networks.
In addition, in this way the cultural wealth which the major churches
possess, due to their extensive collections of old and valuable books, becomes
visible for the outside world.
For the religious and church libraries themselves and for their employees the VThK
catalogue can also be very useful with respect to acquisitions, bibliographical
research, or directing interlibrary loan requests, and as a help for their own
cataloging.
The VThK sees itself as the continuation of the mid 1990's computer church network
catalogue, KiVK, created by the joint commission of both church
library organizations, AKThB and VkwB, which was available on CD-ROM up until 1998.
The 3rd edition of this catalogue contained entries from one million book titles and
240,000 articles from about 70 member libraries.
However, unlike the KiVK, the VThK no longer copies the data from member libraries
from time to time into a common catalogue. Instead the searches access the current
status of the participating catalogues.
In this way the searches provide results that are as up-to-date as possible.

The decision is made to discontinue the KiVK in its previous form as a CD-ROM
edition containing a mixture of catalogue collections. Its successor is to be a
meta-catalogue with the new name VThK. For technical solutions
varying portals will be investigated and evaluated. The technology of choice is
determined to be that of the Karlsruhe
Virtual Catalogue (KVK Karlsruher Virtueller Katalog). |
